Young Starlings moult all primaries the first autumn, quite unusual but great for learning about moult. The moult starts with the inner primary (p1) and progress outwards. The longest outer paler brown, unmoulted primary is p9, p10 is very short and not visible in this picture. Moult progress is given a score between 0 and 50, an unmoulted feather is 0 and a fully grown one is given the value 5. This bird has p1-7 fully grown, p8 is growing and visible beyond the outer primary coverts, about 1 cm long and gived the value 2. Moult score for this bird is 37.
